How the judges will score this competition

After consulting our A&R contacts, as well as friends in the industry we have been advised to judge the bands using the 5 categories below. Each category will be scored between 1-20 and the top score possible is 100. The categories are as follows...

1. Song Quality:
This category is pretty simple. The judges will be scoring this category on how good the performing band’s songs are. Regardless of what sort of genre the judge personally prefers, a good song is a good song and the judges will be giving bands marks out of 20 for how good their own material is.

2. Look / Image:
Whether you like it or not, image counts for a lot in the music industry, and A&R types are always looking bands whose look & image fits the style of music they are performing. Judges will be scoring the bands out of 20 on whether they think the bands look & image fits the music the band are playing and whether they have brought anything new to the stage image wise.

3. Musicianship:
Judges will be scoring the bands between 1 and 20 for their musicianship in this category. They will be looking to see how well each band member can play their instrument, how well they keep time, and whether they are in full control of the instruments they are playing and the music they are trying to make. In the unfortunate event of any sound issues, the judges are knowledgeable enough to tell the difference between bad sound coming from the band, and an issue with the sound engineer.

4. Performance:
In this category the judges will be scoring the bands on their stage presence & overall performance. Judges will ignore song quality, musicianship & look for this category and score bands purely on how they performed their material. They will be looking to see if the performance have any impact to the crowd? Did the band look confident and comfortable on stage? Did the band give their all? Were they nervous addressing the audience? In this category the judges will take all that into account before giving a mark out of 20.

5. Professionalism:
This category will be scored solely by the sound engineer. He will mark each band out of 20 for how easy they were to work with. i.e. arranging equipment share with other bands on the bill prior to the night of the event, how quickly they got on and off of stage, timekeeping (from arriving at the venue on time to making sure their sets don’t over-run). Basically the sound engineer will judge bands on their overall professionalism for this category.

Here is an example of the judges score sheet:
